We know how important it is for sponsors to be able to communicate with the child they are supporting. For the children and their families, it is a real highlight to receive a letter or card from their ‘Madrina’ or ‘Padrino’. It makes them feel so special and cared for. For sponsors too, it is heartwarming to receive a letter from Guatemala or Albania with news of the child they support and their family.
Over the last couple of years the postal service to and from Guatemala has had real difficulties, with the company providing postal services being suspended, huge backlogs of mail building up and many items going missing. Earlier this year many countries, including USA, UK, Germany, Canada and New Zealand, suspended sending any mail to Guatemala, meaning that sponsors were unable to send cards and letters to their children. Also, thank you letters for gifts were having to be taken out of the country by visiting groups and then posted on once they got home. Not a very satisfactory situation!
To avoid the understandable disappointment of sponsors not being able to send cards and letters to their children, particularly coming up to Christmas time, the UK office decided to offer to send these by DHL courier to the Guatemala office in Antigua, if sponsors sent their letters to the UK office in Inverness.
This has proved very popular and the first two consignments of letters and cards have gone and arrived safely at their destination. We were able to track the parcel and were amazed to see the route that it took to get there:-
Inverness UK – Aberdeen UK – East Midlands UK
East Midlands UK – Barbados – Maiquetia, Venezuela
Maiquetia, Venezuela – Panama City – San Jose, Costa Rica – Guatemala City
Guatemala City – Antigua, Guatemala.
The second one went even quicker, avoiding the weekend, being picked up on Tuesday and delivered on Thursday!
We are delighted that once again the children are able to receive correspondence from their sponsors. At the time of writing we are working on procedures whereby letters from the children back to sponsors will be scanned and uploaded to a cloud, so that national offices can download them to send on to sponsors, restoring this vital correspondence cycle.
Thanks to DHL for a great service!
